Royal Fat Lamb Competition 2024

The 2024 Fat Lamb competition, made possible with the generous sponsorship of the Royal Agricultural Society, the Red Meat Producers Organisation (RPO) and ADM Animal Nutrition, takes place on Saturday 25 May at the Royal Agricultural Exhibition.

The competition will be judged on the hoof by Angus Williamson and Jan de Jong, both senior SAFJA judges. They will be assisted by Shaun Miles from Cedarville.

The carcasses will be judged on the hook by Paul Marais and Jan Horn, two highly experienced SAFJA carcass judges from Vryburg. The winners of the lamb classes of the Royal Carcass Competition will be announced at the Royal Carcass Auction on Monday 27 May.

This is a prestigious occasion for buyers, butchers and restaurants to compete for lamb, beef and pork judged to be the best in the country.

Last year’s Champion on the hoof was bred by 2Broers Dormers, and the Reserve Champion by Hatari Farming.

Gert Lotter Jnr’s White Dorpers dominated the final combined scores, winning Champion Lamb Carcass, First Reserve to the Champion, Second Reserve to the Champion, and the Champion Group.

Lotter’s Champion Lamb sold to Halaal Fresh Meats - PTY LTD in Thornville for R2 200/kg.

164 entries have been received so far from, among others, Gert Lötter, Seuns & Kleinseuns Wit Dorperstoet, Hatari Farming, Bertus Steenkamp, Gras Karoo Dormers, Regina Harmse, Twee Seuns Suffolks, Hageland Ile de France, 2 Broers Dormers, Dorfling Dorpers, Zorro Hampshire Down, Harry Meyer and Frank Penn.

We’re looking forward to another exceptional fat lamb entry this year!

The Royal Agricultural Exhibition will take place at the Royal Showgrounds in Pietermaritzburg from Thursday 23 May to Tuesday 28 May 2024, and is proudly sponsored by RPO, Standard Bank and Nashua.
